Flip flops just get discarded on the beach but where do they go? They are the ultimate “throw away” accessory – or are they?
This fascinating video on YouTube explains how discarded flip flops which wash up on the beaches of Africa have resulted in a new industry which recycles the flip flops and creates a living for the many people who sculpt and carve them into animals which are then resold.
This is a fantastic example of the circular economy where one man’s waste becomes another man’s business. The product, in this case flip flops, isn’t put in landfill but reused and recycled to create a new product.
I guess the next question is “what happens to the animal sculptures once they are no longer needed?”
If you know the answer to that question, please let us know
